The above image is FALE SA “CHCH” (1999) by Michael Tuffery, and housed at “Christchurch Art Gallery/Te Puna o Waiwhetū.” “Fale sa” means “holy house” or “cathedral” and “CHCH” is a short hand reference to Christchurch, New Zealand. Christchurch Cathedral was a massive Gothic-revival stone building that was damaged in the 2011 earthquakes. Tuffery depicts this building on a boat, which is an odd juxtaposition. For me, it speaks to the transmission of major and immobile structures via the sea (colonisation). Note how the crosses look also like stars, hinting again at navigation, transmission, and Christianity.
